I think my music taste has always been on the weirder side, so I thought it’d be interesting to have a dedicated page for it! (Even if a few of the early ones are a bit embarrassing >.< but I was younger, so oh well…)
Pre-Japanese songs
Sure, as a child (2010s) I listened to the songs that were in the radio, because I didn’t know anything else. I still remember having a mp3-Player with some radio pop songs on it (not an iPod, a cheap one that was very small and only had buttons and no display). Though I don’t think I used it that often?
2016 - Monstercat
Songs from that era
Then around 2016-ish I somehow got into EDM. Back then I was watching a Minecraft YouTuber & Streamer who always used Monstercat music as background music. For whose who don’t know, Monstercat is a big music label in the EDM space, and their music kinda stuck with me back then, though I haven’t listened to any of their songs for a while now. They’re also known for having a collab with Rocket League. So I mostly listened to music from that label back then, and also from other channels.
A few songs I really liked at that time are above (I put more of them in this section than the others, since they’ll
probably never appear on the music page)
I don’t listen to songs from that era anymore though, maybe because my music taste changed, even though a few of
them I still like...
Japanese songs
2018
Songs from that era
One of the artist who published songs under Monstercat was Aiobahn, a Japanese music artist, who later got really
famous with INTERNET OVERDOSE. He published a few English songs to that
label, and I really loved them, like If We Never (which is kinda cute and
sweet) and Medusa. I remember being very excited when Medusa got
announced, and I was on a school trip when the song came out and immediately listened to it, and I was amazed. I
mean that song is still great, even if I don’t listen to it that often now. And I guess through him I kinda got into
Japanese music with his Japanese song I’m Here.
I dug a bit through my YouTube History from back then, and I completely forgot that there was another Japanese song
with Japanese lyrics that I was really into back then:
HoneyComeBear - Mirror, first listened December 2018. And that was
published under a channel called “Waifu Wednesdays” (yes I
can’t imagine a even weebier name), there I listened to multiple of their uploads later on (I mean their songs were
great, but it looks like they aren’t active anymore). Back then YouTube was filled with channels who uploaded music
videos with anime art, and I guess younger me found that appealing? And I guess that made me a weeb before watching
anime. (Maybe a story for another time?)
At some point (Summer 2019) I started to watch anime, and anime songs like anime openings also came to the list of songs I heard.
2020 - Rhythm games
Songs from that era
Another big thing that got me into Japanese music were Rhythm Games, especially Muse Dash (December 2020), which not
only introduced me into “rhythm game music” and denpa music, but also into Nanahira, which I still love to this day.
(Muse Dash had a whole collab with Nanahira in case you didn’t know) And I guess Muse Dash also made me kinda
addicted to rhythm games in general (and I also have over 100 hours in that game, which is something I don’t manage
that often).
I also played osu! for a while, and I also found a few songs there (like the band TUYU), but I don’t think that game
impacted my music taste that much?
2021 - Vocaloid
Songs from that era
I always heard about Vocaloid from here or there, and I also listened to some Vocaloid songs that Spotify or YouTube recommended me here or there.
Actually the first time I heard a Vocaloid song was back in July 2016 when I was bored and browsed through the eShop
on my 3DS and found the Project Mirai demo there. Back then I was watching a small streamer on Twitch (I can’t
remember his name though) and he also had a viewer who was always crazy about Miku, so that’s where I first heard of
her. And when I was browsing though the demos and found that game, I wanted to know what this Miku was about.
The demo had two songs: Senbonzakura and
-lots of laugh-, in that order. I remember kinda hating -lots of laugh-
back then, but now I like it. But Senbonzakura… I immediately fell in love with that song. It was completely
different from what I knew. I also looked up the video on YouTube on my Wii U, and the
Project Diva version was the first one that came up, and I was kinda
stunned by the music video. Now did I continue listening to Vocaloid songs? I don’t think so? I mean I booted up the
demo every now and then (also was kinda close to the demo limit, the demos on 3DS had limited times on how often you
can start a demo), but never looked much more into that game.
But as I kinda got more into Japanese music, and often got Vocaloid songs recommended (I think the Electic Angel Giga version was one of the first songs that got recommended to me), I wanted to learn more about it, which is why I bought Project Diva on Switch in November 2021, and only a year later bought it for PC and the 3DS version (I also have over 100 hours on the PC version).
2023 - Touhou
Songs from that era
Like with Vocaloid, I heared about Touhou from here or there (mostly from
Bad Apple videos, and also
Necromantic), and I also sometimes got Touhou songs recommended (like
Night of Nights,
also as jazz). But when I heard the song
My Heart Rate from Shinra-Bansho, I got really interested into Touhou.
That was on vacation in Summer 2023, and when I got back from vacation, I started playing
Touhou 6 - EoSD. And after a few weeks I
even managed to 1CC it on Normal! (Though that was the only Touhou game where I managed that until now) For those
who don’t know, 1CC means to play the game without any continues (after you run out of lives, you get the option to
continue). Of course I never managed to beat the extra stage though.
And around the same time, I also started to play
Mystia’s Izakaya, which introduced
me more into the characters (I feel like that game is great to get into Touhou, and can also be played by anyone who
doesn’t know about Touhou and is still enjoyable). And as usual as I started to listen to more Touhou songs, YouTube
recommended me more Touhou songs (at that point I already stopped using Spotify).
And I guess that’s all I have to say about my weird music taste and the journey behind it. It was interesting
looking back on how I even got here with my music taste. (And also a bit embarrassing seeing what I listened to in
the past >.<)
Sadly I still can’t be confident about my music taste in real life (whenever someone asks me what kind of music I
listen to, I always say I listen to different kinds of music and leave it at that), but at least here I can share
it.
I’ll update this page in the future if something changes (like if I get into Japanese idol groups, kinda was close
into falling into that rabbit hole).
